Former High Risk Foster Child, 13 years in County system, survivor of Severe Child Abuse, as a child, he was diagnosed as Mentally Retarded, was going to be institutionalized because of severe behavioral problems, erratic behavior and violent tendencies. Foster Parents, Teachers, Social Workers later realized he was wrongly diagnosed as he developed. The Story of Derek’s life is truly amazing. Abandoned early in his childhood and plunged into the harsh and uncertain depths of the county foster care system, he has spent his life coping with hardship and overcoming adversity. Even against unbelievable odds, Derek never gave up, using music, laughter, will power, and positive decision-making to triumph over adversity.
